Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo, on Monday said that Federal Government is looking up to the Chartered Institute of Transport Administration of Nigeria (CIoTA) to make recommendations for the regulation of the transport sector.
Osinbajo, who dropped the hint at the opening ceremony of the ongoing Transport Summit organized by the Institute in Abuja, expressed optimism that the Summit would produce a rich outcome judging by the stellar quality of speakers at the event.
Represented by Minister of Transportation, Rt. Hon. Rotimi Chibuike Amaechi, the Vice President said Federal Government is looking forward to strong recommendations for regulating the transport sector from the point of view of pricing of services, technical quality and safety of transport equipment in a secure environment.
“Government would look up to your Institute for guidance in policy formulation and implementation. The impressive attendance at this summit and the quality of attendees show that your Institute is well prepared for this role. From the stellar quality of speakers at this Summit, government would expectantly look forward to a rich outcome of the Summit with strong recommendations for regulating the transport sector from the point of view of pricing of services, technical quality and safety of transport equipment in a secure environment”. According to Osinbajo, “I have no doubt that this Summit can deliver on this. Any economy without affordable transport services is far from being developed. And such services must be readily available, the equipment for transport services must be safe and the operating environment must be secure.
“In all of these, government will play its part by providing the enabling environment, while the private sector should play its part by mobilizing the necessary funds and personnel. Government is already doing its part, with the Companies and Allied Matters Act (CAMA) 2020, The Finance Act 2020, PEBEC and several other initiatives in place. Rest assured that government would be interested in the recommendations of this Summit as may be contained in the Summit Communique” he said.
Also speaking, Dr. Bashir Yusuf Jamoh, President and Chairman, Governing Council, CIoTA, noted that the efforts of the Institute should serve as advocacy to point the way forward for achieving a robust intermodal transport system in the country.
Jamoh said the Institute will study the existing legal framework for the sector to strengthen areas that are weak for the overall improvement of the sector, adding that, the activities of the Institute would touch for good all transport modes including road, maritime, railway, aviation, and pipeline transportation systems.
Jamoh further noted that significant improvement had been achieved in the area of maritime security since the introduction of the Deep Blue Sea project earlier this year.
