Two persons were confirmed dead, while several others were injured and property worth millions of naira destroyed, last week when a train rammed into a 14-seater commercial bus on the level crossing in Agege-Pen Cinema area of Lagos State.
The incident happened at about 9am when the train journeyed from Ijoko, Ogun State enroute Apapa terminus, Lagos State. There were conflicting accounts about the casualty figures which sources in the area put at seven but emergency agencies said only two lives were lost.
According to eye witness account, the stationary commercial bus with number plate FKJ 829 XW and a commercial tricycle were on Agege Pen Cinema end of the rail track when the train rammed into the bus leading to the death of two people while several others were injured.
General Manager of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) Adesina Tiamiyu, said two persons died in the crash while one other was injured and taken to the Lagos State University Teaching Hospital, Ikeja, for treatment.
He said, “The agency received a distress call around 8:57am via the emergency’s toll free number that a passenger train collided with a parked commercial bus, forcing three of the hanging passengers to fall off the moving train.
“One adult sustained injuries and was transferred to LASUTH. Unfortunately, two other adults lost their lives. They had been taken to a mortuary by the State Environmental Health Monitoring Unit.”
