The Tin Can Island Command of the Nigeria Customs Service said that part of the challenges it faced in 2019 was the removal of some terminals hitherto under the command.
The Public Relations Officer of the command- Mr Uche Ejesieme, who disclosed this in a statement made available on Tuesday, said the removal of the terminals had a negative impact on the volume of cargo as well as the command’s revenue during the period.
He said, in addition to this, there were other challenges such as poor access roads, lack of government warehouse facility, lack of operational equipment at the terminals and lack of scanners.
He said but for these challenges, the command would have performed more than it did in 2019.
Ejesieme noted, however, that despite the challenges, the command was able to generate revenue in excess of N346.5bn.
The amount exceeded the command’s revenue target of N342.3bn by N4.2bn, he added.
He said,” A comparative analysis of the revenue against the preceding year, 2018, shows an improvement in the collection by N2.97bn. The revenue for that year was N343.5bn.
“Also, a comparative analysis of the compliance level indicates an improvement of four per cent in compliance compared to 2018.”
He noted that the compliance came on the heels of the implementation of a series of transformational agenda and standard operating procedures developed to facilitate trade without compromising the extant provision.
