The Federal Government has approved the payment of severance pay to Tally clerks and on-board security men who were disengaged from the Ports in 2005.
The disengaged workers were members of the Dockworkers’ branch of the Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria and their disengagement happened shortly before the 2006 port concession.
The Nigerian Ports Authority had worked with the MWUN to verify the payment and beneficiaries in 2018.
The verification exercise took place in various port locations in Lagos, Onne, Rivers, Cross River and Delta States.
The Minister of Transportation- Rotimi Ameachi, while approving the payment in a letter dated September 5, directed NPA and the MWUN to work on effecting the payment.
The letter signed on behalf of the ministry by the Deputy Director, Coastal and Ports Administration, Balarabe Wali, read in part, “Further to our letter dated 8th August 2019 on the above subject matter, I am to inform you that approval has been granted for the payment of severance benefits to the verified disengaged tally clerks and on-board security men as recommended, to maintain peaceful industrial harmony.”
Responding, the President-General, MWUN- Adewale Adeyanju, and Secretary-General- Felix Akingboye, expressed appreciation to the minister and the management of the NPA for the approval.
