The Lagos state government has promised to prioritize partnership with FRSC in the areas of drivers training to help reduce road carnage to the barest minimum.
The Deputy Governor, Dr Obafemi Hamzat who was ably represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation Lagos state, Mr. Olowoshakun Kamal, made this known during a one day sectoral workshop, held in Ikeja Lagos on Tuesday.
In a key note address, the Sector Commander, FRSC Lagos, CC Olusegun Ogungbemide, said “it is important to know where we are coming from, where we are currently, and where we are heading to.
“When you look at the evolution of the Special Marshals in the last 33 years, you will realize that there is backdrop in the activities of the Special Marshals in the areas of public enlightenment and operational activities.
The State Coordinator, SM Olusegun Akintan who in a welcome address said that “bringing together elder statesmen who had in one time or the other served this nation as Special Marshals remains historic as their efforts towards the growth of Special Marshals in the state cannot be forgotten.
He commended his predecessor, SM Olusola Olojede, who is now the Zonal Coordinator, RS 2 ( Lagos and Ogun), for laying the foundation which he stands on and his ability to honour all the past State Coordinators during the 2019 Sectoral Workshop “was what has given birth to our recognising our elder statesmen who have done well in the past”.
He said that “the annual workshop/lecture program is where we review our past activities as Special Marshals and strategize ourselves for the future challenges, furtherance of the FRSC 2021 Corporate Strategic Goal of Improving Personnel Capacity & Competence in Road Safety Management by the Special Marshal RS 2.1, Lagos.
“It’s exactly 156 days when this administration came on board, saddled with the responsibility of taking up the mantle of leadership as the 8th Special Marshal administration at RS 2.1, Lagos. For some people, this is too short to make any meaningful impact”, However; for us, work started same day we were elected, 22nd May, 2021″.
Recall that immediately this administration came on board, a Capacity building training was organized tagged ” Train the Trainer” which was aimed at improving performance of Units Executives in the State, the Units Coordinators, the Deputy Units Coordinators, the Units Secretaries and the Units Public Enlightenment Officers so as they can train others and the training exercise remains an ongoing one”.
He said, as a way of strategising in the area of our operations, two committees were inaugurated, namely: Media/Publicity and Advocacy Committees. And just last month, a Welfare Committee was also introduced as a way of seeing to the Welfare of Special Marshals in the State.
Akintan further stated, that it is imperative for incentive and protection for Special Marshals in the course of discharging their responsibilities in order to encourage active participation.
Akintan also used the opportunity to outline some of the Special Marshals projects in RS2.1 and in all the unit commands in the past 156 days as follows: Renovation of RS2.1B Isolo; Ongoing Borehole project at Sector command Ojodu; Donation of dozens of Chairs to over 7 units; Painting of RS2.13 Apapa Command; Erection of Quarter guard by Unit 77; Donations to Ojota Unit command.
Others are: Donation of Flyers by Unit 110 & 77; Donation of executive chairs by Sir Ainabe William of Unit 64 Ikorodu Command; Advocacy at RCCG Abesan estate, RCCG cathedral and Gowon Estate; Interlocking done at the Sector command by Unit 104 Rotary Club Ojodu and Donation of traffic stand.
During a technical session, Prof. of Transportation & Logistics, UNILAG, Iyiola Oni; gave some points on the topic “Volunteerism Beyond Ember Months:The Role Of Special Marshals In Combating Road Traffic Crashes” as the Special Marshals need to forge stronger collaboration and partnership with academia and network of NGOs for veritable harness of technical and strategic resources.
Immediate past state executives who received Excellence Award are: SM Olusola Olojede, SM Olu Ajiboye (late), SM Olusegun Akintan, SM Bright Okesokun, SM Zacchaeus Majonagbe, SM Raufu Ajibaye (late), SM Ezinna Ekenobi, SM Dalton Akperi, SM Emmanuel Adebiyi, SM Nduka Obuzor, SM Lekan Kuku and SM George Benson.
