The Standards Organisation of Nigeria says it has established a strategic relationship with the Association of National Licensed Customs Agents and Alaba Electronic Dealers Association to halt the influx of substandard and fake products into the Nigerian market.
The Director-General, SON, Osita Aboloma, disclosed this during a courtesy visit by the electronic dealers and representatives of ANLCA to his office in Lagos.
The SON boss said it became necessary due to numerous complaints from consumers, affirming that the collaboration would reduce the influx of substandard goods to the barest minimum.
While he noted that Alaba market was fast assuming notoriety which had tainted the goods there as wanting in quality, he advised the traders to deploy a self-regulatory mechanism to identify and sanction those giving them such bad tag.
He said they should be ambassadors promoting good standards and quality products.
He said, “If you are recognised as being a standard ambassador, people will have more confidence in your products. You will have traceability of your products. Quality and standards keep evolving and we need continuous feedback from you. We need you to be quality vanguards.
“We want to rekindle our relationship, emulate your neighbours, the Electrical Dealers Association of Nigeria, establish a SON desk in your market, bring quality assurance closer to you people.”
Aboloma said the SON’s automation portal in respect of product registration and pre-shipment document, which made the clearing goods at the ports easier.
Responding the National President, ANLCA, Iju Nwabunike, said the association would continue to support the government through all lawful means within its capacity.
He commended SON’s automation processes, saying that it has helped to achieve seamless cargo clearing activities.
On his part, the Executive Chairman, Alaba Electronics, Paulinus Ugochukwu, said that since he assumed office, it had not been business as usual for electronic dealers.
He said his administration was working with all stakeholders to bring back the glorious days in the market.
