The Governor of Lagos State, Mr Babajide Sanwo-Olu recently commissioned 102 brand new Locally assembled compactor trucks and 100 Double Dino bins for the Lagos State Waste Management Authority (LAWMA).
The commissioning, held at the Sports Ground, Lagos House, Ikeja, is part of the T.H.E.M.E.S Agenda of the Babajide Sanwo-Olu Administration. Solid waste management represents a crucial part of the ‘Health and Environment’ pillar.
The 102-brand new waste collection vehicles comprise of thirty (30) 12 Cubic meter Compactor Trucks, sixty (60) 24 cubic meter compactor trucks and twelve (12) Hook Loaders.
Each of the trucks, which are locally assembled in Lagos, Nigeria, has trackers for effective monitoring. The trucks also have no space for “hanging”. They have a dedicated sitting compartment for the workers that will handle the waste as they move around the State.
According to the State government, the drivers and their assistants have been trained to troubleshoot and fix simple issues that might arise as they move around the State.
The average compactor truck can carry 10 tons of waste. This implies that more than 1,300 compactor trips have to be made daily to provide an effective waste collection service.
These trucks will be distributed among LAWMA formations and operational districts, for effective coverage of the state, for optimal performance and the work begins immediately.
