Several pictures of the sprawling waste went viral on social media, as many residents condemned the Lagos State Waste Management Authority.

The Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, and the State government were tagged in several posts of the incident on Twitter.

The Commissioner for the Environment and Water Resources, Mr Tunji Bello, in a statement, said workers had been deployed to clear the refuse.

According to the statement, Bello revealed that the confluence of waste in the area was due to dredging of System 6c downstream from the Lagos University Teaching Hospital and blockage at Akobi Crescent.

He added that the blockage was to enable the contractor to conclude the dredging and clearing from LUTH in Idi Araba before it reached the Akobi Crescent end.

“The Commissioner said immediately the refuse was swept to the area by the rain, the ministry mandated the appropriate agencies to clear it immediately.

“He reiterated his appeal to residents in the state to desist from dumping refuse in the canals and drainage channels,” the statement added.
