Following the destruction of their farmland by oil spillage, the residents of the Ilaje Local Government Area of Ondo State have called on the state government to assist them.
The communities affected include Awoye, Muse, Gbakura, Akintola, Jero, Odopado, Oroto, Aiyetoro, Okeunla, Okupi and Ogundeje Communities.
It was gathered that the spillage was caused by the exploration activities of an oil company.
One of the residents of the affected towns, Mr Samuel Oriade, said the spillage had polluted the environment to the extent that it was difficult to get potable water in the communities.
Another resident, who identified himself as James, said, “The spillage started few days ago and our farms and water have been polluted. We can’t farm, we can’t fish; government should intervene.”
The State Commissioner for Environment, Mr Funso Esan, promised to visit the affected communities.
He warned the resident of the communities against eating dead fishes from the polluted river in the area.
