The Nigeria Auto Manufacturers Association (NAMA) has thrown its weight behind moves by the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC) to streamline the number of auto assembly plants scattered all over the country.
In an exclusive interview with Transport Day today, May 9, 2024, via phone call, the Executive Director of NAMA, Mr. Remi Olaofe, stated that the move by NADDC is meant to re-organise the industry and bring sanity to the sector.
According to the NAMA boss, “it is a good move, we need to streamline, and look at what is happening in South Africa for instance”.
In would be recalled that the Director General of NADDC, Mr. Joseph Osanipin had last week in an interactive session in Lagos with members of NAMA and Africa Association of Automotive Manufacturers (AAAM), stated that the NADDC is poised to streamline the number of auto assembly plants in Nigeria.
Osanipin had said the agency has already sent out evaluation forms to all auto assembly plants in Nigeria with the aim of reviewing the input from the auto plant operators and revoke the licences of inactive ones.
Meanwhile, Olaofe also commended the interactive session organised by NADDC, as according to him, it is a move in the right direction to rejig the local auto industry.
According to the 4th edition of the Nigeria Auto Guide (www.autoguide.com.ng), Nigeria’s only authoritative auto industry Directory, while NAMA has a membership strength of 31, the NADDC approved auto assembly plants are 67.
