It has been established that one of the major reasons why many commuters shun water transportation in the country is because of aquaphobia, which is the fear of water.
Hence, the Lagos State Waterways Authority (LASWA), led by its General Manager, Mr. Oluwadamilola Emmanuel, has taken the bull by the horn by hitting the grassroots in order to catch them young, exposing school children early to water.
Already in its 4th edition, the programme tagged ‘Water Savvy Kids programme’, has been able to train no fewer than 200 school children in different parts of the state.
In the grand finale for the 4th edition held at Gbagada area of the state, earlier today September 13, 2024, the General Manager said he is “proud of our progress in raising awareness about the waterways’ transport system’s vital role in the ecosystem and the crucial importance of protecting them”.
According to him, “this programme has educated our children and empowered them to become ambassadors of water conservation, safety, and sustainability. Throughout this programme, we have witnessed young minds face the challenges and opportunities of managing our inland waterways resources. Their enthusiasm and commitment prove that our inland waterways’ future is safe.
“Lagos is a city surrounded by water, so our inland waterways are one of our most valuable assets. They provide transportation, support commerce, and are essential to the well-being of our environment. But with this gift, comes great responsibility, and programmes like Water Savvy Kids instill in our younger generation the sense of duty needed to protect and maintain these resources”.
Also speaking, the Lagos state Commissioner of Transport, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, stated that “Waterways transportation is not just an alternative means of moving people around; it is the lifeblood of our cities, communities, and future. Through this programme, we’ve seen young minds take action, demonstrate responsibility, and learn how to safely, securely, and better conserve and protect our water transport systems. Their dedication and enthusiasm have been truly inspiring.
“I also want to acknowledge Dolphin Swim School and its swimming instructors. Your dedication and support, demonstrated through your daily involvement with the students, the LGA counselor, and the Somolo /Bariga local Government, have been instrumental in making this programme a resounding success”.
In his remarks, the Permanent Secretary, Lagos state Ministry of Transport, Maroof Olawale Musa, enjoined the newly trained students to be good ambassadors of water transportation.
“To our exceptional young participants—this programme was designed for you, and you have made us all proud. As you leave here today, remember that the lessons you have learned are not just for the moment but for life. You are the ambassadors of water safety and conservation. Your role is crucial in carrying these lessons forward, impacting not only your immediate surroundings but also the broader Lagos community. We trust in your commitment to our mission”, he said.
The trained school students, who were presented with certificates, demonstrated their newly acquired swimming skills in the Bloomgrey swimming pool to the admiration of participants.
