The Lagos state government has suspended the implementation of the E-Call Up System, introduced to streamline and regulate truck activities along Lekki-Epe axis of the state.
This was sequel to a meeting held by the state ministry of Transportation and the relevant trucking unions and associations concerned at Alausa, Ikeja.
The associations and unions in attendance were the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers (NUPENG); Independent Petroleum Marketers Association of Nigeria (IPMAN); Nigerian Association of Road Transport Owners (NARTO); and the Petroleum Tanker Drivers (PTD), a branch of NUPENG.
According to a Press statement made available to Transport Day by the ministry, the government yielded to the request of the Union leaders to suspend enforcement of the e-call-up system to allow them further engage with their members.
“The union leaders promised to ensure parking compliance by their members while the engagement meetings is on-going, whilst the Ministry will enforce in the event of violation of the promise.
All parties agreed with the importance of the e-call up system as the best solution for managing trucks movement along the Lekki-Epe corridor.
Aside the state Commissioner for Transportation, Mr. Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who led the government team, the Permanent Secretary in the ministry, Mr. Olawale Musa was also in attendance.
It would be recalled that the government had announced full commencement of the E-Call Up system to commence on March 1.
The technology-driven e-call up system has been in the pipeline for over two years in anticipation of large vehicular traffic that will be generated by trucks assessing the Lekki Deep Seaport, Lekki Free Zone, Dangote Refinery and other industries within the axis.
