The Lagos State Government has banned the activities of Commercial Motorcycles (Okada) & Tricycles (Keke) in some Local Government Areas after consultations with stakeholders, the State Security Council.
All forms of Commercial Motorcycles are included in the ban. Which imply that Gokada, Opay, MAX and others will be affected.
Lagos State Govt says Buses will be rolled out for these areas but it’s working on making transportation in the state safe as the security and safety of lives of Lagosians are paramount.
It disclosed that from 2016 to 2019, there were over 10,000 accidents recorded at the General Hospitals alone. This number excludes unreported cases and those recorded by other hospitals.
The total number of deaths from reported cases is over 600 as at date.
LASG stated that motorcycles (Okada) and tricycles (Keke) are also used as getaway means by criminals.
It affirmed that the ban is in compliance with the extant Transport Sector Reform Law 2018.
The following Local Governments (LGs) and Local Council Development Areas (LCDAs) are affected:
1.Apapa LG and Apapa Iganmu LCDA
2.Lagos Mainland LG and Yaba LCDA
3.Surulere LG, Itire-Ikate and Coker-Aguda LCDAs
4.Ikeja LG, Onigbongbo and Ojodu LCDAs
5.Eti-Osa LG, Ikoyi-Obalende and Iru/Victoria Island LCDAs
6.Lagos Island LG and Lagos Island East LCDA
The full enforcement begins on February 1, 2020.
Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) are ALSO banned on all highways, bridges and the listed roads.
Law enforcement agents have been directed to ensure zero Tolerance for Motorcycles (Okada) and Tricycles (Keke) in (on) the listed Local Governments, highways and bridges.
