Motorists who look forward to register their vehicles in Lagos state recently passed through a tough time as for over one week the number plates were not readily available.
According to findings by Transport Day newspaper, many motorists were frustrated after paying all the necessary registration fees, only to be told that they cannot access the plates.
As a result, some motorists had to seek alternative sources of getting their vehicles registered in the Federal Capital Territory and some other neighboring states, while those who had already made payments and those who insists on Lagos number, had to wait.
When Transport Day reached out to the spokesperson of the Lagos Motor Vehicle Administration Agency (MVAA), Mrs. Famakinwa, though she confirmed that there was scarcity, she nonetheless affirmed that normalcy has since returned as motorists are now getting the plates on demand,
The scarcity of the number plates was attributed to lack of essential materials used in the production of the plates.
It would be recalled that Lagos state government had opted to install its own number plate production facility in difference to those operated by the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC), which services all the states of the federation.
Only recently, the agency responsible for the production of these plates in Lagos state was in the news for allegedly fraudulent activities, as a Federal High Court in Lagos sealed the Zenith Bank account of the Lagos State Government Number Plate Production Authority over an alleged fraud of N3bn.
Justice Mohammed Idris made the freezing order following an ex parte application by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).
