Lagos State Governor Akinwunmi Ambode, has said a total number of 53, 970 vehicles in the State, have so far been certified with the computerized vehicle inspection service within the duration of eight months.
Speaking shortly after the commissioning of eight computerized vehicle inspection service centres in Epe and  Agric-Isawo/Ikorodu, he said out of the 93, 768 vehicles inspected within the period, 53, 970 were certified while 39,798 failed but 29, 977 had a retest and were certified.
He said the vehicles were tested in both Odogunyan/Ikorodu and Ojodu centres for Emission, Machine Based Head Light Test, Visual Inspection Check. Steering and Alignment, Suspension, Brake Performance and Underneath inspection amongst others.
Represented by the Honourable Commissioner for Transportation Mr. Ladi Lawal, the governor said the computerized inspection service centres are aimed at ensuring best international best practices in the State.
According to him, research has proven that 90 per cent of road crashes occur due to human errors while mechanical and environmental factors account for only 10 per cent.
The new centers are located at PWD, Gbagada, Agric-Isawo and Epe. Others are Oko-Oba, Ipaja-Ayobo, Oko-Afon and Badagry to join the existing two centers at Ojodu and Odogunyan-Ikorodu.
Present at the occasions were the Olu of Epe Kingdom, Oba Shefiu Adewale who was represented by the Seriki of Epe Kingdom, Chief Mumuni Apepete, Secretary Ikosi-Ejirin Local Council Development Area, Honourable Bamidele Diisu amongst others.
Speaking earlier, the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Transportation Dr. Taiwo Salaam said with the centres in place, the issuance of Road Worthiness Certificates will be hinged on inspection of vehicles at any of the centres.
“The Governor has recognized road accident as one of the hazards leading to untimely deaths, as a result, the centres will test all categories of vehicles in order to minimize road accidents across the State,’’
Also speaking, General Manager, Lagos State Computerised Vehicle Inspection Service LACVIS, Mr Segun Ogunnaike said the project is a promise kept by the governor. He said, “the project has been in the pipeline foe eight years but took the governor less than a year to access and approve because of his love for human lives. The Vehicle Inspection Centres has the largest concentration of mechanical engineers to serve the teeming population in the State’’.
He said 20 additional centres will be commissioned across the state before the end of 2018.
