The Independent National Electoral Commission has declared the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, as the president-elect in the general election held Saturday, February 25, 2023.
Tinubu, a former Lagos State governor, and a former Senator, was declared the president-elect after polling 8,794,726 votes to win the 2023 presidential election.
The INEC Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, announced Tinubu as the winner at the International Collation Centre in Abuja during the early hours of today, Wednesday, March 1, 2023.
Tinubu won the election ahead of other top contenders — the Peoples Democratic Party candidate, Atiku Abubakar; the Labour Party candidate, Peter Obi; and the New Nigeria Peoples Party candidate, Rabiu Kwankwaso.
According to INEC, other candidates’ results were-
6,984,520 for PDP; 6,101,533 for Labour Party; and 1,496,687 for New Nigeria Peoples Party.
Nonetheless, the credibility of the election has been questioned following the INEC’s inability to comply with the expected electronic transmission of results from polling units.
International observers have also stated that the election lacked transparency.
The President-elect is expected to be sworn in on May 29, 2023.
