The Corps Marshal, Federal Road Safety Corps, Dr Boboye Oyeyemi, has directed officials of the agency on patrol nationwide to impound all trailers carrying containers that are not properly latched.
He decried the continuous carriage of containers by flat-bed trailers without proper latching on the highways and ordered the immediate seizure of such vehicles by patrol teams anytime they were sighted.
A statement by the Corps Public Education Officer, Bisi Kazeem, on Saturday quoted the corps marshal as saying that in a bid to get such dangerous trailers off the road, the FRSC had sealed a partnership with the Nigerian Ports Authority.
Oyeyemi said that apart from the dangers to lives and properties, such containers when they fell on the highways or any part of the road, could lead to road obstruction that would cause undue hardship to motorists through gridlock.
“In order to avert this and stop its recurrence, the corps marshal has directed the operatives of the corps to be on red alert and impound any of such trailers when found on the road,” the statement added.
He also said that the corps would achieve this in collaboration with other law enforcement agencies.
He urged members of the public to take advantage of the National Traffic Radio 107.1 FM or the toll-free 122 to report any of such trailers seen on the highway.
He gave the National Traffic Radio numbers to call at all times as 09067000015, 0805 299 8090.
