The Nigerian Railway Corporation (NRC) and Transport Day newspaper as well as some relevant stakeholders, are collaborating to host the Nigerian version of the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD), next month.
Spearheaded internally by the UIC, drawing railway industry representatives, road authorities, academics and more from around the world, it aims to raise awareness about the dangers associated with the road/rail interfaces (level crossings).
The International Level Crossing Awareness Day is a joint commitment that began in 2009 with ELCAD (EU countries + Israel). Since then, UIC has been coordinating this worldwide event to raise public awareness about the dangers at level crossings. The 9th edition of ILCAD was held on June 2, 2017, with over 40 countries in attendance and was officially launched through a press conference and a roundtable. The event was hosted by the Railway Association of Canada (RAC) in Montréal, Canada.
Each year a partner country of ILCAD hosts the International Level Crossing Awareness Day (ILCAD). The Croatian railway infrastructure manager (HZ Infrastruktura), together with the Faculty of Transport and Traffic Sciences in Zagreb and the International Union of Railways (UIC) are pleased to be co-hosting the 10th ILCAD international conference on June 7, 2018, in Zagreb, Croatia.
The international organisers say “if you specialize in areas such as level crossing safety, Engineering, Education, Enforcement, Human Factors, Users’ behaviour, Innovative technologies, Land planning, or Inspection and wish to bring your expertise as a presenter to this conference”, you can present a paper.
The International Level Crossing Awareness Day is a joint commitment continuing from the success of the first European Level Crossing Awareness Day held on 25th June 2009 in 28 countries raising public awareness on the dangers of misbehaviour at level crossings.
Level crossing accidents account for only 1.2% of road deaths but 29% of all rail fatalities based on European statistics. Road and rail organisations from participating countries acknowledged their shared responsibility to deal with this issue by organising safety events to develop public awareness and safe behaviour at and around level crossings.
In Nigeria, Transport Day is planning to mark the day in collaboration with the Nigerian Railway Corporation and other relevant stakeholders in the industry.
