The Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP) has revealed that it had successfully restored five polluted sites out of the 21 it started in January 2019 in the first phase of the exercise.

HYPREP who handles the clean-up of Ogoni polluted land, also added that it was waiting for its internal and external verification of samples collected from the restored sites, as well as the final results from statutory environmental regulatory bodies in the country.

The Project Coordinator of the agency, Dr Marvin Dekil, stated this on Wednesday while addressing journalists during the 9th anniversary marking the submission of the United Nations Environment Programme report on Ogoniland.

Dekil recalled that contracts for the Phase One, Batch One of the clean-up commenced in January 2019 and added that barely two years after, it was on the verge of completing the cleaning process of the polluted sites.

He said, “The five lots, where remediation work has been completed are: Deebon Bodo/Mogho in Gokana, Nkeleoken/Alode in Eleme, Korokoro Well in Tai, Obolo Ebubu in Eleme and Bara Akpor Botem in Tai Local Government Areas of Rivers State.”
