The airport was shut down on August 24, 2019, by the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria over safety concerns following the collapse of the runway.

Reconstruction of the airport was subsequently awarded to PW Construction firm by the Federal Government. The airport was initially announced to be reopened before December 25, 2019, for Christmas, but due to a lack of funding, the completion and the reopening date was shifted to Easter 2020.

The reconstruction work was then suspended with the COVID-19 pandemic cited as the reason.

The Minister of Aviation, Hadi Sirika, in a tweet revealed that the reconstruction work as began and a definite date of completion would soon be revealed.

He said, “We announce our full remobilization to Enugu despite COVID lockdown. Even with challenges like heavy rains, opening up of quarries and bitumen sources we should complete this procurement in few weeks. A definite date of completion will be announced at my next site visit.”
