The Nigerian Customs Service and the Nigeria Immigration Service have concluded plans to begin a joint border security exercise across 25 states in an attempt to secure Nigeria’s land and maritime borders.
The Public Relations Officer of the NCS, Joseph Attah, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday.
The joint border security exercise, codenamed ‘Ex-Swift Response’ will also be supported by the Armed Forces of Nigeria, the Nigeria Police Force and other security agencies.
Attah explained that the exercise, which is to be coordinated by the Office of the National Security Adviser, will take place in a total of 25 states across the South-South, South-West, North-Central and North-West zones.
The statement explained that the exercise was expected to promote inter-agency cooperation and increase preparedness to address trans-border security challenges such as terrorism, armed banditry, smuggling, and proliferation of small arms and light weapons.
Pointing out that the exercise would involve the movement of personnel, vehicles and equipment in the concerned areas, the Customs’ spokesman urged members of the public not to panic but to continue engaging in their normal activities.
