Nigeria Customs Service Officers in the Ogun Area Command I have reportedly shot dead one person during a clash with suspected smugglers along Aselu and Igua communities in the Yewa North Local Government of Ogun State.
It was gathered that the incident occurred on Saturday when the operatives accosted a convoy of motorcycles allegedly ferrying smuggled foreign parboiled rice along the bush paths of the communities.
The spokesman for the Command, Abdullahi Maiwada, confirmed the incident in a statement on Sunday in Abeokuta.
Maiwada explained that the smugglers on sighting the Customs officers launched an attack on them.
“The officers successfully repelled the attack launched by the smugglers and at the end, one of the smugglers died and his corpse has since been deposited in a mortuary.
“Furthermore, the arrival of reinforcement teams enabled the evacuation of forty-four bags of rice and two motorcycles abandoned by the smugglers to the Government Warehouse, Abeokuta for safekeeping and further investigation.”
