The Nigeria Customs Service has directed that its men should immediately stop the supply of all petroleum products within 20 metres to all international borders.
According to a circular dated November 6, 2019 and sighted by Transport Day, it stated that “the Comptroller General of Customs has directed that henceforth no petroleum product, no matter the tank size, is permitted to be discharged in any filling station within 20 metres to the boarder (border)”.
The circular signed by a Deputy Comptroller General on behalf of the CG and addressed to the all relevant commands of the service, added that “consequently, you are all to ensure strict and immediate compliance, please”.
It would be recalled that last month, the country’s borders were closed in an exercise that officials have explained is meant to protect the economy from abuse by neighbouring countries.
On October 14, the Comptroller General of Customs, Colonel Hameed Ali (rtd), announced that Nigeria has saved over a billion Naira since the exercise commenced.
Calls made to get the reaction of the Customs spokesman, Joseph Attah, were futile as he did not respond to messages sent to him via SMS and watsapp as at the time of filing this report.
