The Federal Government and aviation authorities in the country have been challenged by the air traffic engineers to invest more in building capacity of professionals in cybersecurity.
The engineers stated that this would help to thwart cyberattacks on the Communication Navigation and Surveillance/Air Traffic Management domain.
The President, National Association of Air Traffic Engineers- Ishaya Dung, stated that as an essential link in the aviation safety chain, the onus was on the aviation authorities to ensure that air traffic safety electronics personnel were properly equipped to mitigate the global challenge of cybersecurity.
Dung made this known at the annual general meeting of the NAAE held recently.
Dung stated, “The International Federation of Air Traffic Safety Electronics Associations raised concerns over cyberattacks in the CNS/ATM domain with its working paper ‘WP 105’ presented during the recently held 40th triennial assembly.
“The approval of the International Civil Aviation Organisation for cybersecurity to be included in the competency-based training for ATSEP in document 10057 was a remarkable achievement in the best interest of safety and security of evolving digital interoperable complex CNS/ATM systems.”
Dung also commended the efforts of the Africa Civil Aviation Commission in the presentation of a working paper for the harmonisation of personnel licensing at the regional level.
According to him, it will help to facilitate the implementation of personnel licensing in states that have been reluctant, owing to its non-inclusion in ICAO Annex 1. to invest more in building capacity of professionals in cybersecurity.
