The Motorcycle Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MOMAN) has elected a new set of executives to run the affairs of the association for the next two years. The election held during MOMAN’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) in the Premises of Manufacturers Association of Nigeria (MAN), Ikeja, Lagos.
New Executive members elected are the Chairman, (Boulos Enterprise Limited-Suzuki-Mr. Julian Hardy) and Vice Chairman, (Degab Industries Limited-Mrs. Maureen Omeibe);
Others also elected to take charge of the association are Treasurer, (CFAO Yamaha Motor Nigeria Limited- Mr. Boye Ajayi); Ex-Officio member (Honda- Mr. Emmanuel Hunyiga); and Ex-Officio member (Boulos Enterprise Limited-Mr. Segun Adekoya). MOMAN boosts of a membership strength of over 50.
The newly elected chairman, Mr. Julian Hardy, in his acceptance speech, called for the cooperation of all members, even as he explained that the potentials of the motorcycle market in the country is yet to be fully harnessed.
Aside the election, the AGM also featured a Lecture by the Chairman of Boulos Enterprise, Mr. Robert Ugbaja, who spoke on ‘Motorcycle manufacturing-the missing link in the National Automotive Industrial Development Plan 2013-2020’.
According to him, there are “serious flaws in the plan (NAIDP). The flaws are bound to make the realisation of the objectives of the plan very difficult if not impossible”.
Ugbaja noted that “some of the flaws are as follows-the omission of motorcycle manufacturing in the plan. Motorcycle manufacturing is the foundation on which a sustainable Nigerian automotive industry can be built.
“Most major economies with thriving automotive industries have strong and deep rooted motorcycle manufacturing industry. They built their automotive industries on solid motorcycle foundation which enabled them to start from the basics in developing assembling and manufacturing skills while taking into account local developmental conditions”.
He also said “this approach also enabled the creation of local components manufacturing capacities and necessary supply chains which were later upgraded to meet the needs of evolving automotive industry.
“It is became possible for such economies to migrate seamlessly from motorcycle to automobile manufacturing in a sustainable manner. The advantage being acquisition of manufacturing skills which were later transferred from motorcycles to automobile manufacturing”.
