The Director General of the National Automotive Design and Development Council (NADDC), Mr. Oluwemimo Osanipin, has stated that the need to bridge the gap between car dealers, especially those in used car business, and the auto assemblers in Nigeria, made it imperative for the NADDC to interact with the dealers and formally link them with auto assemblers.
He made this remarks yesterday, Thursday, February 13, 2025, at the NADDC stakeholders’ engagement with the Association of Motor Dealers of Nigeria (AMDON) members, which had the Chairman of the Nigeria Auto Manufacturers Association (NAMA) in attendance.
The DG also explained that there is urgent need to sanitise the used auto market segment of the industry, in order to check the activities of some fraudulent elements who masquerade as auto dealers.
He reasoned that auto patrons, being new or used buyers, need to be protected to ensure that they deal with only the genuine players in the business, as there have been cases of innocent Nigerians being swindled by some fake auto dealers.
He said “we want to check the quality of vehicles coming into the country, and people who are not properly registered bringing in vehicles from abroad to sell”.
Also speaking, the National President of AMDON, Prince (Engr.) Ajibola Adedoyin, stated that his association welcomes the move by the NADDC to formally regulate the used car segment, but advised that it should not come with heavy financial burden on the members.
According to him, the members are currently registered with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC), State Governments, Economic and Financial Commission for Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering (SCUML) and AMDON registration.
In his submission, the Chairman of the Nigeria Auto Manufacturers Association (NAMA), Mr. Bawo Omagbitse, stated that creating a robust relationship between NAMA and AMDON will come with a lot of opportunities.
“There are a lot of opportunities for collaboration between NAMA and AMDON, aside display of cars, there is also standardization and after-sales support. We need the dealers to ensure that sales are made and drive away scammers from the industry. There are also opportunities in financing”, the NAMA Chairman said.
The stakeholders’ engagement was also witnessed by a representative of the Bank of Industry (BOI), Mr. Ayodeji Oluwatuyi, and a representative of the federal ministry of Finance, Dr. Ladan Haruna, who both made incisive presentations, as well as a cross section of AMDON members from different states.
