Making good his threat, the newly elected President of the United States of America, Donald Trump, has activated the relevant government agencies to deport irregular migrants to the country, with some 3,690 Nigerians faced with deportation, according to a document released by the country’s immigration agency. 1,445,549 irregular migrants are on the list released so far.
The US Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), said the data, broken down by nationality and number of people faced with deportation is that of non-detained docket with final removal orders.
The ICE is charged with the responsibility of protecting America from cross-border crime and illegal immigration that threaten national security.
A breakdown of those affected by nationality in the document titled “Noncitizens on the ICE Non-Detained Docket with Final Orders of Removal by Country of Citizenship”, shows that Mexico and El Salvador top the list with 252,044 and 203,822, respectively.
Trump, on his inauguration day as the 47th President of the US, signed a series of executive orders aimed at hardening immigration policies, including the stoppage of citizenship by birth for children of irregular immigrants.
Since Trump’s return to power, ICE has made significant efforts to detain and deport immigrants accused of overstaying their visas or involved in different crimes.
In his first week back in office, President Donald Trump’s administration conducted nationwide ICE raids, resulting in 956 arrests.
A few days later, 1,300 arrests had been made, according to “border czar” Tom Homan. These arrests accounted for about 1.1% of ICE’s total in FY 2024, when daily arrests averaged 310.
