The Acting DG/CE of the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology (NITT) Zaria, Dr. Abimbola O. Odumosu has stressed the role NITT plays in promoting professionalism in the transport sector as a way of reducing traffic accidents in the country.
He disclosed this during the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Association of Driving Instructors of Nigeria (ADIN) and the Nigerian Institute of Transport Technology, Zaria.
Dr. Odumosu who pointed out that NITT had recently decentralized its programmes in order to cater for the training needs of its clients in different parts of the country also maintained that the Institute had a duly certified driving school in line with the Federal Road Safety Corps regulations.
According to him, “This memorandum of understanding comes at a pivotal moment. It is a significant milestone as it seeks to address some of the complex challenges that have profound implications on safety. This signing therefore establishes a new strategic partnership between NITT and ADIN.”
Speaking further, the Ag. DG/CE highlighted the first priority of NITT in respect of the MoU which was to organize specialized training programmes and workshops to produce competent practitioners towards realizing the set objectives.
On his part, the National Deputy President of ADIN, Engr. Umar Musa Mohammed stressed the strategic importance of the MoU which he described as “a significant milestone” that had the potential of transforming the transport sector. He hoped the MoU would kick start an action plan that would translate to safer highways and well trained professionals.
The planned workshop, he said, will go a long way in reducing the carnage on Nigeria’s highways and commended the Federal Government for its efforts towards improving the road infrastructure
Engineer Umar Mohammed explained that although the workshop is planned for the north, he is mobilizing members of the Association across other regions to participate, adding that so far the response has been very positive.
Speaking earlier, Director Training, Dr. Bayero Farah maintained that the MoU was the culmination of past efforts and several meetings between NITT and ADIN adding that he was optimistic that all parties would keep their own side of the bargain.
The Registrar of the Institute, Mall. Sule Bello, thanked everyone for the crucial roles they played in making the MoU a reality. He noted with satisfaction the critical role NITT had pioneered over the years in professionalizing the transport sector in Nigeria.
