With increasing insecurity on Nigeria’s inter-city and city roads, frontline seaport terminal operator, APM Terminals, has taken a proactive step to train its drivers on how to manage insecurity while on the road.
Transport Day witnessed the training of the first batch of 20 drivers at the Lagos State Drivers Institute (LASDRI) over the weekend (Saturday, December 4, 2021) where they were tutored on the theme –‘Situational Awareness: How to manage road insecurities as a driver’.
The lead facilitator, Commander David Ofem, a retired Federal Road Safety Corps Zonal Commanding Officer (then overseeing Lagos, Ogun, Oyo and Osun states), made presentations on how to sense danger while driving, how to manage after it must have been attacked among others.
Interestingly, he advised the drivers to be always security conscious, and avoid being provoked to engage in any fisticuff on the road or pull over in unsafe places.
Peter Adetunji, the Talent Development Associate of APM Terminals, Nigeria, explained the essence of the training, saying “we want our drivers to be top notch, APM Terminals is continuously contributing to the growth of its staff, we have a very good safety record”.
Also speaking, Aziegbemhin Abraham, the Fleet Coordinator of APM Terminals, added that “we do this yearly because driving is dynamic, and the insecurity situation in the country. Aside Lagos, our drivers in Onne, will also benefit”.
